The number of connections in a network environment is usually resource dependent.

"Networking situation" is a very broad description for a connectivity discussion. Is the network wired or wireless?What is the bandwidth? What is the application to be used?
Are you on a LAN or is the usage for the Internet? What hardware will be used to for connectivity?

In any peer to peer network situation, whether it is a Windows or a Mac machine, you access other pcs on the network and do not connect to it as such. The network size and permissions govern how many pcs are on the network and what they can access.

Therefore you question as asked, cannot be answered.
