The principle source of power for human activities are fossil fuels, which were created by the decay of ancient plant matter. The power to grow the plants was provided by the sun through photosynthesis, so even when we burn gasoline, in effect we're burning sunlight.

If you're referring to a "mains power" that is a term often used for power available from your wall outlet. It is a primarily British usage, as I understand.

It`s got to be the sun. my caravan runs on it. it it powers my tele/lights/mp3 player/microwave/water pumps etc.all through my solar panel. and some of the items are mains 240v.
