Remove any batteries and store the toy in your attic space. When your boy is an adult, you can bring it down and have loads of fun remembering the long hours you spent in line trying to buy Elmo, or the way your boy couldn't sleep without that annoying toy.
At least, that's what I told my daughter we'd do.

There is a web site, www.freecycle.org. It is a site where you post stuff that you no longer need and or want and people respond back requesting the item. It's all free though. And you can find some decent stuff too!

Does it still work? If I were you I would clean it up , place it in a ventilated bag and store it for his own children. If it's in good shape, it will likely be worth something some day - OR at least you can bring it out at his wedding and embarrass him with it

Donate it to Salvation Army, if it's still in working condition. If not, just throw it away. Poor people may be desperate, but it's an insult to give them broken things.

Please release it into the wild. Tickle-me-Elmo's are not domesticated animals and should flourish when roaming in small herds across their natural habitat - the local tip.
