I have had to put down dying pets over the years and EVERY time the other pets in the house hung around the dying pet more in the last few hours, so I can certainly believe it.
I have also read about dogs that could find malignant cancers.
I'm sure part of it is a change in smell that they can pick up on. But whatever the reason, I hope someone like Oscar is around when my time comes. I'd find it very comforting to have a kitty curled up next to me in my final hours.

I think its crazy the things we continue to observe and learn about animals every day, there is always some new revelation. I wish we understood more because once we truly understand the emotional scope within animals we may stop cutting through their populations with so much disregard and cruelty. Sorry to be bleeding heart but that's how I feel. As for Oscar...one time I was talking to my husband and referred to my cat using an expletive. When she heard what i called her, she looked right at me, hissed, and took off. Cats, man. Uncanny little sh*ts!

Where did you hear this? A news search doesn't bring up anything recent on Oscar the cat.

Animals can detect thin gs we can not through odor. As this is a home for dementia patent's, it could be that as the body is in the process of shouting down which is does than this cat is able to detect this and than he stays by them.

It hasn't occurred to anyone that the cat might be a serial killer?
