I believe that both authors are equally talented and both stories were supremely written. They both contain magic, suspense, action, love, fear, etc., and they both draw their readers in to care for characters that you might not have thought possible. However, all in all ... The Harry Potter series was written with a younger audience in mind, even if only in the beginning, therefore I believe that that series should win the debate because those books certainly do allow for a larger spanning of age groups to read the books and comprehend them much easier than Tolkien's books do. I mean seriously a child of the age of 10 could sit down and read all of the Harry Potter novels and understand them, but that isn't true for The Lord of the Rings.

Lord of the Rings every time be it the book or the films. Don't get me wrong I adore Harry Potter but when I compare it to LOTR there is no contest.

lord of the rings for the movies, but harry potter for the books. i love the lotr movies, but wasn't crazy about the books, and i ADORE all the harry potter books (read the first few about 19 times each and already re-reading the 7), but think the movies pretty much suck.

Harry potter. Lord of the rings is far to long and complicated for my 5 year old son. He sleep half way to the film.
