I know snape agreed to protect harry but why then was he so mean to him even from the start. Why didn't he think of harry as being part of lilly instead of being part of james?

Yeah I agree with you, he should have seen Harry as part of Lilly, and been nice to him due to Harry being part of Lilly.
However, I suppose Snape saw so much of James in harry that he just couldn't accept him. Snape must have been so angry and jealous with James for marrying and having a child with Lilly. He hated James and couldn't get other that. Snape would have done anything to bring back Lilly. Snape did protect Harry other the years, he didn't have to work with Dumbledore, he could have easily went off with Voldermourt. He didn't, so he did what Lilly would have wanted him to do.
Snape just couldn't help seeing James in Harry and thats probably why he was so angry at him.

As well as the above answer I'd say that we all thought, as did Harry, that Snape was still working for Voldemort. In that case I think Snape had to keep his front up, Voldemort hates Harry, Snape works for Voldemort, therefore Snape hates Harry

Because it killed him to do so... it made him to remember things he didn't want to remember. He blames himself for Lily death. Plus it didn't help Harry cause that he looked so much like James.
But I would like to point out that he did also think of Harry being a part of Lily at times. Do you remember at his ending, he said "Look at me." This was so he could get a last glimspe of those green eyes he loved so much.

Because he knew from cumbledore that harry was gonna die and he didnt want to make harry feel all happy and nice in real life
and he did remind him of james that irritated him coz he was the one who got lily not him

Because the bad memories james put on him were much stronger than the good ones he got from Lilly, I guess. Bullying is something you would never forget.

Because Harry was the child of the girl he loved and the man he hated, but before he died, he said "Look at me", because he wanted Lily's eyes to be the last thing he saw before he died.

I think that is because Harry looked like and acted like James while he was at hogwarts.

lily died 2 protect harry so obviously snape blamed harry for lily's death and so he's kinda pissed wid him
