Is it legal to self-publish a document using Windows fonts or MS-Word Fonts (like Arial or Times New Roman?)?

In other words, do I need to pay a royalty fee or buy a license to make money (just a little bit) selling some books (printed and bound in my own home) that employ fonts from MS-Word? Or did buying the license for the software cover me for that?

you have no worries..you purchased the computer and software and paid you fees to be able to use it for your benefit. you have the right to use it in however you see fit.

If you publish anythign with MS Word you do not have to pay anything kind of royalties for it. When you buy the software you buy the license to use said software. This would include anything that comes with the program (fonts, clipart, templates, et cetra). Technically I believe the font that you are referencing are given to you by windowns and not word, but it is the same thing. You pay for the OS you pay for the fonts. Now the issue of course becomes: Did you pay for the software? If you were to get something published and it became popular and you didn't get to right to use the software leagally then you might have some problem. If you remember a few years back there was a song called Barbie Girl. The artists ended up getting sued by the people who own the Barbie line for the use of it in the song that they did not get permission to use.

Buying a license from for the software/product (or if it came with the computer you use) covers that aspect of using MS-Word's software.

Arial and Times New Roman aren't owned by MS. they are common usage printing fonts from book and newspaper days.

I think the normal fonts are google it though maybe not the word art. But theres sites that you can use the fonts of and it'll tell you personal use or commercial.
