Consumerism is the doctrine that buy, buy, buy runs and the economy and keeps it healthy. More than that, it teaches that "happiness is in abundance of goods".
Children are influenced by advertising, peers, movies etc that happiness comes from owning goods. Much advertising is directly aimed at them knowing that they will pressure their parents to buy desired goods.

con·sum·er·ism - noun
1. a modern movement for the protection of the consumer against useless, inferior, or dangerous products, misleading advertising, unfair pricing, etc.
2. the concept that an ever-expanding consumption of goods is advantageous to the economy.
3. the fact or practice of an increasing consumption of goods: a critic of American consumerism.
Using the first definition, I would say it affects children by providing safer products.

With all the spoiled rotten brats out there, advertising geared towards children just makes them whine for things that their parents may or may not be able to afford but give in because they don't know how to tell them no and stick with it! There are some pretty pitiful excuses for parents out there that can not control their children, ADD is a man made problem caused by poor parenting skills!

My goodness, Samhillesq it looks like you've been dying to give your opinion on ADD. However, it is not 'man-made' as SPECT topography imaging and studies on mono- and dizygotic twins all present with a genetic indication.
Next time you want everybody to hear you rant about something, make sure you're not so easily discredited; it makes you look so, so foolish...
