Most black people in the western hemisphere are descendants of Africans transported as slaves to European colonies. Their are great differences in the amount of gene flow in different areas. In central and south America and the Caribbean the amount of genetic mixing is greater than in the United States and Canada. So more blacks in Brazil do have Portuguese ancestry than black in the US and Canada have British ancestry. Also Britain was not the only colonial power in what is now the United States and Canada. California and at least parts of what are the modern states of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, California and Nevada where under Spanish colonial rule. The Louisiana Territory was French until it was purchased by Thomas Jefferson and French is still spoken in Quebec today.
