That's right........Lily & James Potter did die in Oct 1981.
Here's why Harry is 17 in the book....
Harry was born on July 31, 1980.
He was more than a year old (1 years 2 months ? days), when his partents died.
The first book starts in 1981, on the day James & Lily die, but the second chapter shows that 10 years have passed in the meanwhile. That makes it 1991 in the book.
Harry is 11 by then.
So the subsequent books follow.......with Harry growing older by one year in each book.
It took Jo 17 years to write all the 7 books, the last one being released in 2007, but in the books harry has only grown 7 years.
The last books starts when he is 17 years old & that is the year 1997 & all the events in book are shown to happen in 1997-98.
Hope this helps.

Rowling started writing the books in the 90's. So at that point in time yeah he was turning 11. Each book one year. Do the CORRECT math

A few years ago JK Rowling wrote a family tree for Draco Malfoy's family which was sold at a charity auction. It stated that Draco was born in 1980. When writing the book she had to be in keeping with dates ahe had already written, therefore although the last book was brought out in 2007, it is set in 1997.
For God's sake these thumbs down are ridiculous whoever it is ...read the link .... Harry was born the same school year as Draco Malfoy so duh he would have been born in 1980 (possibly 1979 like Ron and Hermione but it states Draco and Harry weren't 17 until after Xmas because they couldn't do their apparation tests. How would JK explain that she had written Draco was born in 1980 and then suddenly Harry was born in 1990?

YES a couple
The Whomping Willow was planted 'bcoz Lupin went to Hogwarts 50 years ago' Him and Sirius are only 35 to 40 years old. Sirius was around 22 when he went to Azkaban.
The quezzi I posted about Hermione saying she had never performed a memory charm, yet she tells us she modified her parents memories and she then obliviated the 2 death eaters knowing the theory only.
JK Rowling tell us in interviews that she was no good at maths. C'mon JK use a calculator!!!!!

JKR started writing the series in 1995. So the maths is still out but closer. Harry's years at school would have been consecutive, so the series would end in 2001/2 school year by that logic. It's just taken 12 years to finish the story of 7 years!
You're right though, the maths is still wrong. I don't think there is ever a mention of the year previous to this. So in that case let's assume the story is set with Harry starting school in 1993 and finishing in 1999, then it all works.
Remember Star Wars was set 'a long time ago in a galaxy far far away'!!!

The first book was published in 1997. If we were using your logic (2007 = 17 years old) than the first book would have to have been published in 2001 (2001 = 11 years old, the age Harry was in book 1) and each book would have to have been published in every one of the subsequent years (2002 = 12, 2003 =13, you get the picture I hope)
Harry Potter was "born" on July 31st 1980. It's all in the books

The books take place in only seven years. In book one he turned 11 and in book 7 he turned 17. Each year was a year in Hogwarts. Therefore the year of book 7 was 1997.

but the last year of the book is not 2007. Think about it. the first book was out in 1997, there are 7 years ( 7 books each book 1 year) there is 10 years between the 1st book and the last!
The books are not in real time....
