Yes they can and I have living proof of that.
But it can only be based on a very long friendship and on the fact that they both realize that's the best way (to be just friends).
And when coming from a guy, this means it IS possible. Slim chances, but possible.

As lots of people have said...NO if there is any attraction. We all have good intentions, but unfortunately since friendship is always a good basis for romance, the slightest sexual tension on either side is likely to put a big strain on the relationship. It is possible, especially if both parties have plenty of other love interests to keep their mind off it.

I know it's possible if both are honest about it just being friendship.
In today's society, I don't think it would matter much if one is in a relationship, that doesn't seem to matter to a lot of people.
I feel it's like anything else where you have to keep things in perspective. Did you really want that person as just a friend to start with if there is sexual tension.

My best friend is a guy and there is absolutely no type of tension between us, i've know him since we were 3 and not once has us being together even crossed my mind, I thnk it just depends on the two people and whether the reason they became friends is because of sexual tension.

Of course they can. Unless of course the man has designs on the woman or vice versa. I have many lady friends that are near and dear to me but I wouldn't even consider any kind of sexual relationship with them. And it's not because they aren't attractive because they are. It's just that I don't look at them in that particular light. They are just friends. I may be a bit different, but there must be some kind of chemistry goin on for me to be interested sexually. And then that has to lead to love and finally marriage, before any hanky-panky.

I believe men and women can be friends, but only if there's no attraction whatsoever to start with, because if there is it's bound to grow the more you know them
I'm not so sure about best friends though, because a close friendship is love minus the sex, but i suppose a man could love a woman/woman could love a man like a brother/sister

Yes it is possible....I have plenty of female friends...because they're female doesn't mean I want to sleep with them....it is probably easier when one or both parties are married or in a steady relationship but I see no reason why there cannot be a good friendship between people of the opposite sex.

Many moons ago I had a really great platonic friendship with a really lovely guy. We used to go everywhere together and naturally folk thought we were an item. However, eventually I decided I wanted more than a platonic friendship and made advances to my friend......like I kissed him. He freaked out and ran screaming from me. He phoned me up later to finish our friendship saying that he was gay and had been for years and thought I knew.
Very sad that few of us have males friends that are just that... though my hubby is my best friend.
I think you will find it is very common on the continent of Europe for people to have good friends of the opposite sex.
I just messed up and lost a great friend...ah me if only hadn't got my H'penny excited.

Yes they can. My best friend is male. I've known him for 15 years. There is no sexual tension between us at all.
