It depends on what the attic space is going to be used for and where you live. If you just want storage space, and live in a fairly dry climate, just use 3/4 inch OSB. It's a lot cheaper than plywood. In a more humid area use exterior grade 3/4 plywood. If you're trying to create a finished floor, like for an apartment or office above the garage, use tongue and groove plywood or OSB that is rated or sub-floors. Any lumber yard can give you more specific details for what the building code in your area requires.
