First of all, a manager in baseball effects the outcome of the game far less than the coaches do in the other three major sports. Over a long season, talent is what will win in the end, and the Reds don't have enough of it right now to compete.

Given that, if they make a few wise moves to shore up their pitching, they could turn it around in a hurry, as the National League in general is very weak. In that division especially, anything is possible, so who knows. I like Mackanin, but any manager needs talent, so they just need to make some good moves in the off-season.

I'm pretty sure (barring an incredible turn around) that he won't even be the manager next year. The fan base is clamoring for a name manager. He certainly seems to have a better handle on the team than previous management, but their are still too many problems with the bullpen and situational hitting for this team to make a serious turn around this year.

If Adam Dunn can work on his post moves, Griffey stays healthy, and Harang improves his free throws. I do think that Brandon Phillips is the point guard of the future.
