Forget DELL, for starters. Their laptops, like their PCs, are cheap but DELL uses obsolete components and both sound and graphics are on-board. Open a DELL and the case is almost empty. Open a good laptop / PC and the case will be packed. The best two, in the UK are Mesh and Evesham.com. The reason is that Mesh use better components than DELL (which is a US company) and if you have any problems, Mesh Customer Service is far superior to DELL. Evesham have excellent Customer Service and should you have any problems, unlike DELL, Evesham will send an Engineer to fix it. Evesham have won awards as the best manufacturer for this year (again). As for those spammers that are recommending DELL, a DELL laptop / PC is obsolete before it is even delivered. Their machines have too little power and should you want to run any resource hungry software, you can forget it. One other suggestion is to get it from an Independent Retailer. The best in South London is Modern Computers on the Old Kent Road. At least you will be able to return any purchase without months of excuses like we can't find it, it's still with the courier etc. etc. Also, a good Independent will be able to advise you and assist you with your purchase, unlike a major retailer that just wants to see how high a price they can get you to.

I recommend you to buy a HP laptop..
I own the HP Pavilion dv6000..dv6312ea to be exact..
specifications:
1.Intel Dual-core inside
2.Windows Vista Home Premium
3.HP QUICKPLAY
4.HP IMPRINT FINISH
5.HP REMOTE CONTROL
6.Built in 5-in-1 card reader,webcam,bluetooth,microphones
7.HP LIGHTSCRIBE TECHNOLOGY
8.HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO(Altec Lansing)
9.WIDESCREEN DISPLAY

And many more!

This is more than just the basic,,For sure you'll enjoy it..
I'm a first year Nursing Student and it's very usable for me..
It sustains my academic and entertainment needs!

ADVICE:
Don't buy laptop made by "NVER BEEN HEARD BRANDS"
buy from those who specializes on computers like hp and dell..
These two are able to balance PRICE AND QUALITY on their products...
People have different tastes on laptops..
It's up to you to choose and configure your own..
Settle your mind on WHAT YOU NEED and WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL TO YOU when choosing laptop specifications..

DON'T BE TOO MUCH RELIANT ON OTHER PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCES ON LAPTOPS BECAUSE THEY ALL USE DIFFERENT MODELS AND SPECIFICATIONS..
For example..Other people might say that they have a bad experience with hp and good experience with other brands primarily because that brand has higher specs that made it likable than his hp..Vice Versa..

Ok, for this day in age if you want a good cheap laptop you want at least-
1.6ghz (pretty much the processing speed)
At LEAST 500 RAM (If you like games though get 800-1000).

Thats basically the most important things.
