If my gets stinky, I drench a cotton ball with vanilla extract or your favorite perfume and drop it into the bucket. Your house will smell great as you vaccum. To clean it out, just pour about 1/2-1`cup of salt over the capet and vaccum it up. It's abrasive enough to clean the inside without hurting it.

For odors, I use AirZyme. It is a non-toxic, biodegradable enzyme based formula. It breaks down odors quickly and it doesn't come back. The trick that I learned over the last two years that I've used this product is that you have to apply this stuff directly at the source of the odor, let it sit for about 24 hours and that does the trick for me.
Keep in mind that AirZyme will remove the odors quickly, but the odor will come back if you don't get to the source.
I buy Ecodiscoveries' AirZyme from my local store in town. They are not in the big food chains when I last checked, so that could change. You can search on their website for a local store that carries the products. Their website, I think, is www.ecodiscoveries.com.

Depending on the age of the vacuum and what kind it is you may want to have it serviced by a tech.. They will change the filters replace any belts you have and do an overall cleaning of the unit.. I take my vacuum in at leat once a year. I too have a dog and I use baking soda once a week on the carpets.. So, my vacuum doesn't smell.... Vacuums don't last forever, w/o some type of annual maintance... good luck

I normally put a pad of cotton wool soaked in my favouite perfume inside, and the smell permetes round everywhere, and seems to take away the smell. I have 2 dogs, and my large one moults all the time, so his hairy smell was always in the hoover until I tried this. Hope this helps

Just drop in a couple of cotton balls and saturate them with either some Vanilla extract or some of your favorite perfume into the vacuum bag or cup, or you can wipe out the canister/cup with some White Vinegar on a soft cloth and allow to dry do not dilute the vinegar. Good Luck !

If it's a hoover, forget it. Just vacuum with carpet fresh powders.
If it's a dyson, you're in luck. It will break down completely with few or no tools. Just dissasemble the pieces and clean 'em with soapy water.

Is is a Dyson or is it a Hoover?

If it's a Dyson just take it apart and hand wash everything with soap and water and allow it to airdry. If you don't have the manual any longer you can find it online, just search your model.
