Give em' a wash with regular detergent w/o fabric softner and add about 1C. of baking soda to the wash.. This will soften w/o losing the "drying" effect ot the towels.. It will also help to make them colorfast.. Fabric softner ruins towels and makes them have a "slick" feel and not absorb as well.. Good luck

I have a set of embroidered day of the week dishtowels that are white, crisp material. I thought they were cotton, however, having had them for a year and washing them over and over, they have not softened. The hemmed edges curl, which makes them difficult to fold They have not softened at all. I am now letting them cool on the stove after having brought the water just below boiling with a quart of white vinegar added. They do not feel a bit softer.

when you by new tea towels and bath towels you need to wash them before you use them as there is a product within the item that needs to be washed out i think its due to the dye that is used on the products at the factory before you purchase them there is also a ingredient i think its called a lime that needs to be washed out before use so that the towel or tea towels can become absorbent. hope i have helped you.

Wash them in warm water with one cup of White Vinegar without added detergent or fabric softner wash for about thirty minutes then dry on low or delicate cycle, the vinegar will soften and clean them and remove the dressing they have on them while new, one or two washings in vinegar will make them very soft before use Good Luck !

Older tea towels were made of cotton or linen. It could be that your new ones are not. If that's the case, there's not much you can do to make them absorbent and soft.
BUT if they are cotton or linen launder them and add some vinegar to the rinse cycle...that should help soften them. DO NOT USE fabric softener because it reduces absorbency.

it's pretty normal if they're slippery at first, just wash them a lot of times and they will be like the old ones..
