I own an Acer LCD 20" wide-screen. It is easy on the eyes and allows for better rendering of movies etc, or multiple windows side by side.
I would go to a retail store and look at the various models, sizes and standard screen versus wide-screen and make a choice based on your preferences and eye comfort. I would then buy on line from someone like newegg.com.

LCD is currently the best. I would suggest a widescreen monitor.

Try browsing newegg.com for something in your price range, there are a lot of customer reviews on there too that will let you know the quality of the product.

the things to look for are the dot pitch, the higher the better something like .28 is solid. Also the response time it usually 5 ms for a good one, and also the contrast 500:1 would be good, just weigh those against price and size.

LCD monitors are easier on the eyes, and the environment. never buy a CRT (big, bulky) monitor. LCDs are relatively cheap (and lightweight) nowadays. 17" is a great size for running 1024x768 and even 1280x1024 resolutions.
