How about you just go with the flow and talk about whatever the conservation is landed on? If you pre-plan your discussion topics you will sound weird and rehearsed and it might not fit in at all.

Since you haven't seen them in a while ask them how they are doing- and mean it. Ask what are they up to? Where are they working/going to school? What are they doing for fun, who do they hang out with? It sounds like boring questions but usually it leads to other topics that get the conversation moving a bit.
Remember that everyone likes to talk about themselves and no one will be offended by your curiosity.

Well, sometimes the strong silent type personality can work for you.
But really? Let them start talking, get a feeling for what they like to talk about, what they're passionate about, what interests them ... and then start launching into a conversation with them. Don't be afraid to respond to conversation rather than start conversation.
It also helps to ask questions. Ask what they're into, what they like, what they dislike ... the good thing about asking people about themselves is a) many people LOVE to talk about themselves, b) it makes it seem like you are interested in getting to know them, and c) it makes it seem like you are good at listening ... which is what most people need in their lives.

Look, every person on the planet wants to feel special, like someone is really interested in them and their lives. If you really want to be a hit at this party, focus on talking about whomever you're talking to. Be (or at least convincingly act) interested. Show that you like the person and what he/she is saying. Don't spend your time thinking, "Is this person liking me yet?" Instead, focus on figuring out what this person really wants to talk about, and let him/her talk. You be the very nice, friendly, interested audience.

LIKE THE OTHER PEOPLE SAID: GO WITH THE FLOW! IF THEY SAID SOMETHING STUPID, QUICKLEY THINK OF A FUNNY THING TO SAY (THAT'LL LIGHTEN THE MOOD). MY FRIENDS SAY I'M FUNNY, AND I USUALLY SIT BACK AND SEE WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT. IF I HEAR SOMETHING THAT RELATES TO A STORY OF MINE, I ASK, "HEY, YOU GUYS WANNA HEAR SOMETHIN FUNNY?". DO SOME OF THIS, AND YOU'LL BE GREAT. GOOD LUCK!!!!
