Securitas Security Services is a nation security company, meaning they serve more than just one area and have contracts through-out the country. I can't say in your area, however in St. Louis, MO area, Securitas is better than any other contract agency (from what I've always been told), however if you're younger & plan to make a career/lving out of it, don't expect it. You can proprietary (company hires their on) or contract (contracted to work at a post, but not hired by them, which is what Securitas is) security. Contract security in general is a dead end job with low pay. Average contract unarmed security officer will only make $8/hour. Supervisors in contract security tend to make $10/hour tops. Securitas pays more than any other company, but still isn't something as a career. Contract security is primary good for people that don't need money to bad (as a 2nd job, retired, etc). Your best choice is to work contract security for several years, to gain experience, etc & than try to work proprietary security, as most places won't hire someone for proprietary security without experience. Don't expect to go anywhere far by contract security itself though, the only thing good about contract security is they'll hire just about anyone able to get a security license, able to get hired on with just about any company, and the only thing beneficial about it, is that it can lead to career somewhere else thats security related, but isn't contractual. Email me at riverrescue01@hotmail.com if you have any questions about this or would like to talk to me about this.

RE:
Is Securitas Security a good career?
I have just received my security guard card and will be working with Securitas soon. Is this company a good place to make a career out of or is this another dead end job?

Securitas is a large company with many different contracts. Each contract is a different place and type of job. One contract may be a great job, while another may totally stink (for you). It will depend on the assignment (contract) you get. Some people will like other assignments over others. Hopefully, you will get a good assignment for you. If not, they may allow you to transfer to another assignment. I worked for two different security companies as a flex-officer (trained at multiple sites to fill in for absent workers or when short-handed). This paid more and required much more training, but it paid the best. I worked at several different sites. Some were easy while others really stunk. Good luck and wish for a site that you'll enjoy.

Though I am not a securities expert, I would ask myself the following question if I were in your shoes: How many security professionals, who start off as security guards, actually move up to higher levels of management? From my understanding, most security guards, unless they enter the police academy, don’t have much in the way of upward mobility within an organization. Most individuals who are involved in the business of security move into positions of greater power and pay, as a result of parlaying their experience as a rank and file security guard, and then starting their own security company. Generally there is a glass ceiling in most security organizations that doesn’t allow for the regular security guard to ascend the corporate ladder.
