It seems that the McCanns local newspaper has been inundated with letters and emails regarding the couples 'apparent' neglect of their three children and calls for the couple to be investigated.

Now the newspaper has said that they are ignoring all of these letters and emails (which apparently are in there hundreds) and treating them as part of a 'hate campaign'.

Surely as a newspaper, they have a duty to print a balanced story of both sides?....

How can expressing an opinion be treated as hate campaign?

Hoorah, the simpleton troll manoverboard is back with his usual intellectual contribution!

The local newspaper is simply burying their heads in the sand like all pro-McCanns. Instead of intelligently addressing why many people wish to see the McCanns brought to justice, they just dismiss their views at a stroke with the meaningless words "hate campaign". Then they simply censor information - or in the case of manoverboard, attempt to block any viewpoints they don't like rather than discuss them.

Usually when you read the letters page in a newspaper they always print "for and against" sort of letters - and that's the way it should be. Nobody expects a paper to print all letters but as you say there should be a balanced view. As for a hate campaign - well, some people may well be spitting the vitriol - like numbnuts manoverboard does to the "anti McC" camp. But as I keep saying here - I don't HATE the McC's cos I don't know them - but I don't LIKE the fact that their actions led to the abduction of Madeleine. And I don't LIKE the fact that they are gaining celebrity status and possible wealth from this tragedy. I think the paper is very wrong if this is the situation.

Newspapers very rarely print a balanced story, the papers take a particular stance on an issue directed by the owner/editor and driven by either personnel agenda or what they think their readers want to hear.

The Mercury has heavily bought into the tragedy of a local family story. It is therefore not surprising that they refer to 'a tiny minority' despite commenting on the enormous volumes and they also dismiss any negative comments as 'nasty, spiteful and defamatory'.

Don't expect balance from newspapers you won't get it.

Don't understand how it's a hate campaign! like you said these people are allowed to express their opinion. Seems like this couple has everyone in a leadership position wrapped around their finger.

I couldnt understand from the begining why the press expressed such a sympathetic view for the McCanns. Right from the start the facts were 2 boozing parents at a resturant while the children were left alone, they were lucky all the children werent taken. It sounded like they were trying to do baby sitting on the cheap. But I agree the new paper has a duty to print objectively

the fact that the paper is ignoring public opinion shows how ridiculous this is
yes they have a duty to print a balanced story

they would call it a hate campaign as they love the Mcanns
and are putting them before an innocent child , madeline should come first not the parents

I thought newspapers loved hate campaigns. Newspapers and hate campaigns go together like milk and biscuits.

Well they are two sides to every story and I guess they only want to hear one side and we on Y!A know what that is.

It's called censorship, something which I am totally against.

It's no hate campaign, people want Justice for Madeleine. You know, the poor child left to her own devices on May 3rd by her parents and seems to be forgotten since.
