I'm thinking of buying a new desktop and would like to know more about this Intel Core duo / quad chip. How much faster is it compared to the other memory chips? What does it do exactly? Please help a brother out !!

The Quad cores are processors with 4 cores inside. When running one single-threaded application, it is NOT faster than a single core because only one of its core will be used and the rest are idle. The Quad cores are fast for multi-tasking, running multi-threaded applications and doing symmetric multi-processing.

If you are just a casual user or even a gamer, your money would be well spent on the dual cores.

Think of the Quad core as if having 4 cars. Even if each car could easily do 100 mph, you will never do 400 mph. But you can do a lot of chores w/ 4 cars at the same time rather than waiting for Mom or Dad to return w/ the car so that you can use it too.

The core 2 or quad core denotes teh number of processors which can run paralelly so that your performance gets improved so many times. If u have a dual core 1.5GHz processor, you get approximately 3GHz(a little lesser) and if u have a quad core u can get around 5 GHz(approximately). It basically exploits the parallelism built into the application to give you the speed. This kind of performance would be needed only if you are going to run multithreaded processes like games or video editing or highly complex math.FOr normal applications like browsing, word processing,it makes virtually no difference whether it is a single/dual/quad core.SO see your need and buy...
