How much would it cost to use a copyrighted song in a independent movie? Nothing new, but like a 80s song or old country western.

you can find out quickly whether your song is available and the price at Harry Fox Agency (HFA.com). They provide the clearances for most composers at pre-negotiated rates.

I think this is going to depend a lot on the specific song. If it's something still in circulation, has it's copyright up to date and all, it's going to be a lot more. On the other hand, I would think an artist whose music isn't exactly burning up the charts would love to have their music see a revival. In that case, I would think if you contacted the publishing company that owns the music, or the artist's label, you could get it for very very cheap.

If I had a song that was popular once and hasn't sold any albums in 20 years, I'd sell you the rights for a dollar, in the hopes that your movie is a hit and my music sees a revival in sales.

All of that is just my speculation though.
