I treated my mother -in-law like she were my mom. This went so well with my wife, who appreciated the warm relationship.

Celestine, Darling.. Kindly, post the same question after two decades.. Maybe that time I'm already a mother-in-law..
(Just kidding) lol <*-*>
Anyways, pretending I'm already a mother-in-law:
(I hope I will have a daughter/s within a decade so I can apply these.. lol).
1.) I'll hand him an appreciation note so he will know that I felt fortunate that he's already my son-in-law. Simple word of appreciation can be a strong way of bonding your relationship with people.
2.) I'll listen up for him.. it doesn't matter whether he is silent or talkative.
3.) I'll be an advocate for him.. When someone stars a complaint about him, griping about this or that trait, I'll speak up as his advocate.
4.) I'll praise him.. We all need praise. We are nurtured by it. And a son-in-law is no different.
Why? Well, they say if you want to do something really nice for your favorite "little girl now grow into womanhood," do something really nice for her husband.

I treat my mother-in-law and my father-in-law with all the due respect that they rightfully deserve.
Both my parents are dead so I treat my in-laws as if they were my parents. I always look forward to be able to visit them. Don't presume my mother-in-law is an angel, she can be a fire breathing dragon when she wants to be but I do not have any trouble with her.

I have a son-in-law and I treat him like one of my own kids. As long as he treats my daughter right I'll keep him around. :)
We get along so well that he even comes to visit without her sometimes.

For me, I was lucky. I have a foreign passport and was able to get rid of my mother-in-law (and her whole blasted clan) by going abroad and getting a divorce!

I deffinitly DON'T want to "handle" my mother in law... ;)
Joke aside: Just be yourself, don't pretend to be any worse or nicer than you usualy are. She may be very dissapointed if she finds out about the "real" you.

For me, it is easy. I am in Dallas, Texas, USA and my girlfriend's family is in the Philippines. I don't have to deal very often.
Seriously, I like her mom. I like her family. They're good people.
