It's crazy that no one has even mentioned 1960, Pirates and Yankees.
The Yankees were in the middle of one of their usual dominant stretches and would keep on going to the Series for several more years before they hit a dry spell. They had Mantle, Maris, Tom Tresh, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra - they had all the big names, a real dynasty.
The Pirates had never won anything in years but they were building, and had Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Gene Alley (a great double play combination) and a fair pitching staff with two good starters, Vern Law and Bob Friend and Roy Face as one of the first designated closers.
The Yankees outscored the Pirates for the series by a ridiculous amount - a typical Yankees win would be something like 15-3, and a Pirates win would be a one run game.
It came down to game 7 - the game was back and forth and went into the ninth inning tied at 9 after an error in the 7th or 8th (I forget at the moment) allowed the Pirates to catch up and tie the game. The in the bottom of the ninth, Bill Mazeroski, home run, game over, Pirates win.
This set up the only - yes, the ONLY - game seven, bottom of the ninth inning walk off home run to win a series.
There have been many great series but this one should be at or close to the top.

Take you pick of any year that the Yankees didn't win the world series. Those are the best ones ever!
My personal favorite had to be 1985 when Kansas City came back from a 3 to 1 deficit in the American League Series and come back from the same deficit in the World Series against the Cardinals. Game 6 blown call saves the Royals but the winning run scores on a close play at the plate. Game 7 no doubt about the outcome as the Royals go on to win 11-0. Being a Royals fan, I was really happy to see George Brett finally get his World Series ring. Just wish I had been in K.C. when it happened, I was living in Michigan at the time and of course they wasn't any hoopla about it.

1960 World Series When Bill I Cant Spell His Last Name hit the world series winning home run.
1969 World Series The Mets were the biggest under dog and they WON. That is amazing.
1977 World Series - Reggie Jackson hit three HR's in one game.
1986 World Series - One of the biggest comebacks in sport history.
1996 World Series - A team winning the world series with a rookie shortstop amazing.
2004 World Series - Just the story leading up to the world series. The Curse of the Bambino was broken and they beat the Yankees after trailing three games to none.
2006 World Series The Cards won 83 games in the regular season and wen t on to win the world series.

Me being a Braves fan, and even no it hurt I would have to say 1991 Braves vs. Twins. That has to be the best WS ever. The comebacks, the extra innings, Morris vs. Smoltz, and who can forget Kirby Puckett's outstanding play to rob Ron Gant of a homerun. There was just so much excitement through out the whole series. I mean I haven't seen nothing like it my entire life. It was incredible!

1991. Game 6 Kirby Puckett homers to win it for the Twins. Game 7 Jack Morris pitches a 10 inning shut out, and the Twins win 1-0.
It wasn't just those two games. It was high drama throughout the series.

The 91 series was classic, Gant getting slung off the bag by that fat *** Kent Herbek, The stadium turning the air on full blast when the Twins hit, Jack Morris, John Smoltz. It was a great series. The 2001 series where Arizona won on a flare by Luis Gonzalez was a great one too

The best World Series is the 1985 between St. Louis and Kansas City, because to this day Cardinal fans still cant get over the fact that they got beat.

I might be biast, but 2004 was by far the best world series, well it might not have been the best WS game wise, but the story leading up to it was the best...the 2004 ALCS, was definetly the best, and the fact that the sox won for the 1st time in 86 years made it the best WS, at least to red sox nation.. ik its pathetic, but i still get emotional watchin the tape of the final out.
