Im afraid; is this illegal or can i do somthing about it?

so lately some one has been knocking on our windows
mostly our basement windows and it freaks me out every time i hear it, my brother tried to catch them once but they ran away to fast
i havent seen them but my brothers only detail was that they run fast
it might be a nieghbourhood kid but i dont know they just did it at 2:30 in the morning and i am freaking out
apperantly my brother told me (he sleeps in the basement) that they do it into the morning and i starting to get really scared.
is there anything that i can do?
i turned on the motion dector light and it worked but still.

yes apparently this is illegal because they disturb the peace and quiet of the surrounding buildings or premises. In this case, I presume this is a house. Ah, the best question,what can one do to stop this kind.

Well firstly you have to catch them in the act so to speak, since you are not sleeping in the basement, why not plan something before 2:30 am, something like hidding outside since this kids or whoever they maybe are keeping you guys all night, why not sacrifice one whole morning just to catch them that is what I would do. Let us assume they are 3 to 4 kids or teenager, well in this case, re-arm yourself with baseball bats not knives apparently just to scare them, and ask friends to help you out, 2 of you will scout the premises before 2:00 am and one of your friends is ready with a camcorder to record the event but still hiding so not to be seen with the intruders. Because if you will call the police before 2:00 am, they will tell you only if they are already in your premises but you are not even sure if they will show up in that same time. Time the arrival of the culprits, if you spot them already have one of your guys call the police and wait until they do the usual trick they suppose to do knock on windows and smash some garbage or something then pop out of your hiding places the two of you and confront them if you got the balls to do so, if not just record this guys far from a safer place and once the police arrive show them your video tape and tell them that you are pressing charges against this kids or whatever. You got it?

A sustained habit of doing this is harassment. It is a misdemeanor, but still a crime.

A camera tied to a motion detector could help catch the guy. Ask your neighbors they may have the same problem, there could be a Peeping Tom lose in the neighborhood. Peeping Tom is an invasion of privacy and considered a sex crime with stiffer penalties.

Trip wires hidden in the area might discourage this nocturnal knocker. More likely it is some kid trying to get his jollies by scaring people.

You could place a hidden camera on your property. Pointed at the basement windows.

You might be able to catch them in the act. If you cannot ID them from the Camera, at least you can find out what kind of a person you are dealing with.

You will probably need one that will not easily be seen, but can also see things in the dark. There are many sites on the internet that sell spy and security gear.

First, make sure you tell your parents about it.

Then, call the police and report them for trespassing and/or prowling. Unless you live in a city with really weird, off-the-wall laws and municipal codes, this is definitely illegal.

Lastly, go out and buy a "Beware of Dog" sign....even if you don't have a dog. This idiot won't know that. For all he(or she) knows, you just went out and bought a big, mean Rottweiler!

if u live in TX or FL shoot um if not call the cops. also try goin on ebay and getting a cheap cctv camra and hook it up to an old vcr ods are sumthing cheeky like that its somone u know so catch them on tape itl probly cost a woping 50bucks to get it set up and then u have some evidence for the police to work with if not theres probly not a whole lot they can do

Probably just kids; especially if you're young yourself.

However - if you are young, best to tell your parents just in case it's more than just pranking.

Police usually pay more attention to adults; besides they might like to set up a motion sensing camera.

Call the police; go to your local police station and tell them about it. They will probably tell you "alright kid, we'll drive by your house for a while and see what happens". That probably not being enought,go to Home Depot and get yourself some alarms...Good Luck! that's creeeeeeeeeeeeepy
