Nena's original name for the song was 99 Luftballons. I don't know about MTV changing the song, but it was an anti-war song. Specifically, it was an anti-nuclear weapons song. Maybe it was a bit too controversial so they made her change the lyrics in the American version.

The original is called 99 Luftballons which was originally recorded in German, Nena's native language. MTV played the re-released English version which became a big hit in the US. According to Wikipedia, the English version is not a direct translation of the German but contains a somewhat different set of lyrics.

Personally I think the song sounds much better in German.

The original title was in German, which is the artist's native tongue. It's "99 Luftballoons" by Nina. Not sure about the MTV thing as they originally broadcast it in German. This and "Rock Me Amadeus" were two of only a handfull of songs that charted in another language other than English.

The song, to the best of my knowledge, was originally sung in German, by Nena. My German's rusty at best *sorry* but I think it was 99 Luftballons... or something- whatever the German word for 'ballons' is.
Hope I answered your question!
