A real estate agent is usually a 1099 employee. There are no taxes taken out of their checks. This is what you call an independent contractor. Technically a real estate agent is a self employed individual. The annual salary of an agent varies greatly. The determining factors are the amount of time and effort one puts into the real estate market as well as the market in general. The area in which one lives and works determines salary as well. For example a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in California might sell for $500,000.00 while the same home in Oklahoma might sell for $100,000.00. Since an agent makes a percentage off of each loan that closes, the percentage varies greatly from state to state and even city to city.

I rcently read somewhere that in CA, 1 in 10 individuals living in this great state, have their real estate license. Real Estate agents around my town are a dime a dozen. There are just too many them. And yes, they only work for commissions.

Usually there is no salary its all commission. But there's a few companies out there that will give you a salary and benefits, but your commission split is much lower.
