This could be a problem with the water quality, or temperature. Bettas like tropical conditions, so the temperature of the water should be between 76-86oF (24-30oC). Too high or too low makes then become lethargic and lose their appetites.
If you're keeping the fish in a bowl, it will be harder to maintain the correct temperature. You'll also have more water changes needed because of the small volume of water. If he's in an unfiltered bowl, you should be doing 100% water changes every few days, as opposed to 25% water changes weekly in a filtered tank with at least a gallon of water.
It may also be getting used to the new conditions, or it may be staying still, just because it doesn't have reason to do anything else. Bettas tend to be more active if they have larger spaces, heaters, filters, and something in the tank they can "explore". I have driftwood, some live or silk plants, gravel, and in some cases, tankmates (snails, larger shrimp, other fish).

He sounds like an average Betta. They aren't particularly exciting fish. Come to think of it, most fish aren't very exciting. Oh, and stop tapping on the glass. It won't help him if he is sick, and it can actually harm him by stressing him out.

umm, get a refund i guess. Betas are pretty tough, they'll survive tons of ****. We had a beta that jumped out of its bowl in the car, and still lived after flopping around the car for like a minute. It then lived for a year or two, and it eventually survived on its side for 2 weeks, just laying their in the fish bowl. Named it "McCleoud from the highlander :P ). The pet store should probably get you a new one.

He should be ok. Betas are pretty lazy fish. They usualy find a comfortable spot and lay there. I had a beta for four years and he almost never swam around. Unless your fish is laying on his side or appears to be graying or dull he should be just fine.
