Travelling alone could be quite dangerous now a days in any country. I would recommend you travel with someone or get into a tour with more people. Inka trail is fun and adventurous but do it with someone else and as part of a group. Better wait until you find someone to travel with, it's safer and more fun that way. And this is not just a recommendation for Peru only, it's for any place in the world.
Hey night slayer, I love your positive comments on Peru!! You definetly loved it, I am pleased that you loved Peru that much.

I recommend you book a tour with an agency that does small group organized adventure, and cultural tours such as GAP Adventures, Tucan Travel, Explorandes, Kumuka, etc. You will always be in a group everywhere you go, you will make friends with your fellow travellers, you will have a group of acquaintances with whom to do the Inca Trail, plus you will have the chance to visit other cities with the guidance of an experienced tour leader. So, in this case you can go with friends or by yourself (if you can't find anyone to go with you), and have a great, pressure free time in Peru.
I am a Tour Leader for one of these companies, and I highly recommend this option.

No do not wait. I just returned from Peru and Machu Piccu and I went by myself. Like you I had arranged for a tour and I joined the group in Lima but I went to Lima on my own and I did not know anyone in the group. It turned out to be the trip of a life time and I am so very happy that I got up the courage to just get on the plane and go. it was wonderful proof of my new motto: No Guts, No Glory. You Go Girl.

I am also traveling to Peru, this summer. I chose to go on the Salkantay trail, but it really depends on what you are interested in seeing while you visit Peru. I chose the S. T. becasue I was more interested in the landscape aspect of the hike rather than the historical sites. Although the S.T. does have a couple of historical landmarks, the I.T. has far more. And on the other side the S.T. has a much more amazing scenery while hiking. Also something to think about is that on the Salkantay trail you will probably see almost no one else while you are hiking. Both are probably unbelievable!

I am peruvian and I will be honest with you. GO WITH PEOPLE dont be alone my country is marvelous but it is also a little dangerous look for a tour or a tourist guide.
If you are going to stay in an exclusive zone (Miraflores. Surco, Monterrico) maybe you won´t have problems but the majority archaeological places are out of the principal cities.
Enjoy your travel.

Definitely go with a friend. Peru can be dangerous. Before you live check the State Department website for danger warnings. I think the Shining Path is still operational in Peru.
I was there a years ago, with a friend and relative.
Do NOT go alone.
I recommend you book an Independent Tour, so you can associate with others if you desire, if not, you can be alone.
Be very, very careful in Peru.
