I thought that Egyptians at this time would have sat atop of Gold and been catered on, but it sounds like they lived a somewhat carefree lifestyle, almost like the Greeks. Did they live a less-lush life than what is implied?

In 57 BC Egypt was still ruled by the Ptolemies. The Capital was in Alexandria and the Palace was on an island in the harbor, It has been covered by water for over 1600 years but is now being explored. For some pictures see

During 57 BC, Egypt was under control of the Romans. Specifically, Roman Emperors. Egypt was considered the personal estate of the emperor and for a while Roman Senators were prohibited from going there.

While it was controlled by Rome, it was very Greek in nature since it was conquered by Alexander the Great and, after his death, ruled by the Greek Ptolemies.
