I think this is a great song but sad in a way. My interpretation of the song is that the father really loves his son but never find time to be with him and fill his son's emotional needs because he was too busy doing his job so he can provide for his family.

But the thing is, it seems that whenever the son ask the Dad something and the Dad says no or next time, the son never complains and says that he will grow up just like his Dad. Why is that?

So, the conclusion when the Dad retired and the son grew up and have his own family the son didn't find time to to be with his Dad.

Your interpretation of the song Y!A is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I think the general message of the song is to take time to enjoy life, your family and other things. The years seem to rush by and many people are more concerned about their work & career than they are with family.
Of course the son in the song longs to have more of a relationship with his Dad when he is young, but his Dad always seems too busy. Then when the Dad does want to have a relationship with his son, it seems too late. The Dad has taught the son how to live life and of course, this leaves no time for Dad because Dad didn't take the time to form a relationship with his son.
I also hear a little regret in the Dad when he says, " It occurs to me, he 's grown up just like me."

I think the song is about life being so hectic. The boy loves his father, even though the father doesn't have time to play with him. Then later, the son's life is so hectic, he doesn't have time for his father either. Why would the kid be saying, "I wanna be just like him," if the kid didn't like his dad? Or, "It's been sure nice talking to you, dad." The son never gets mad at his dad because he hero worships him, almost. Yes, a most heinously heartbreaking song. Neat chord progression too.

The song is a lesson in kids learning what they live. The child doesn't say anything, because he knows work is important. That is a recurring theme throughout his life, and because he never learned that it was ok to take time off to goof off and have a good time with your kid once in awhile, he grew up to do the same thing to his son as was done to him.....a very real all too true circumstance.

Its about a father who doesnt have time for his son. Then when his son grew up he was kinda bitter towards his dad.
