After someone told me my political views lined up with Jefferson Davis, I was offended. I believe in strictly adhering to the constitution, I believe in small federal government...the South argued that Davis wanted too big of a central govt in the South, I am a republican, he was democrat. I am conservative, he was an idiot. I do NOT support slavery of course, though I think back then it was better to be a slave than a free black bc at least you were guaranteed shelter and food. Nothing that I know of Davis even comes CLOSE to this. What planet is this woman that told me my politics resemble his on? Is she a wacko? It doesn't sound like I align with Davis, right?

Don't assume that "Democrat 2007" and "Democrat 1860" are the same thing. In fact, the two parties have pretty much traded positions since then.

If you believe in small federal government, then you probably think that states should have more power and autonomy. Davis believed that each state was a sovereign entity, and the federal government was to be a very limited body to promote only those collective interests such as having the same currency and a common defense.

Don't get confused by slavery. There was no threat that the federal government was going to end slavery any time soon in 1860, yet the South seceded anyway. Had they not seceded, the North would not have invaded Virginia. It was more about states' rights than slavery.

There's no way that Southerners signed up to fight for the right to own slaves, considering that most Southerners had no use for a slave, and could ill afford to feed one if someone gave them one as a gift. There's also no way that Northerners signed up to free slaves, when they weren't even protesting the slaves being imported through the Northern harbors of Boston and New York, and if you recall the Amistad case which was very VERY close, that was Connecticut.

Slavery was a side issue. Don't get distracted by it.

dont know, I just know there is always more to the story than what one side tells you. even the civil war it was not good Vs evil it was differing views on what freedom is. the true conservatives of that time was the confederates, but not for the reasons the libs wanna stress. a small limited, cenral govt is what we should have, and i think thats what Davis wanted.

Not to many people care about the constitution anymore, and you get answers like that when people dont know what they are talking about. People use the constitution as toilet paper these days.
