It never hurts to be good looking.
It is essential for being a TV reporter (not fair -- but true).
In the 1960s, it was important to be good looking to be a flight attendant. Not so much anymore -- but it has been a long time since I've seen a flight attendant who is not either a middle aged woman or a 30-something gay man. The fact is that flight attendants with seniority are not stepping down -- making it difficult to break into the field.

To avoid discrimination, both positions will typically request that applicants height and weight be of such proportions that they maintain a neat appearance. They will say similar things about hair, complexion, and so on, but it will all be very politically correct.
It's not the end/all be/all, but --- yeah, it can make a little difference.
