couldnt it be possible were going about space travel all wrong? Im just thinking out loud here

There is believed to be worm holes, just like some believe if you go in a black hole, and some how don't get crushed, you'll come out the otherside somewhere else. But right now, its all just a thoery, I hope to be alive still when we find out... but its not likely.

That is possible, but it has more to do with physics than with space travel. Simply, we don't know if that's possible, and people are too afraid of blindly stepping into suspected portals (like the Bermuda Triangle) and checking out what happens without more mathematical/theoretical evidence that they will be perfectly fine.
But that's a great question. It just depends on if you believe in dimensions and wormholes instead of plain, clear-cut space travel.

Sure, there could be portals everywhere and you need to activate them and you can go essentially everywhere.

Or maybe there are few and they go to discrete places.

Or maybe we need to alter time/space and slip into an alternate dimension that parallels existence, but does not have the restraints on high speed or time dilation.
