carseat, diapers, and sleepers... everything else you can improvise with!!
ie: baby towels are cute, but a towel is a towel
If you're on a budget, really think about some of the things companies market to expectant parents as "must haves" - especially that list babies-r-us gives you...
my only must haves were my boobs, a carseat, diapers, and a few sleepers!

Well first off buy yourself time to sleep as much as you can until she gets here. lol. As for the baby, pampers and more pampers different sizes. wipes, the less the perfume the better. I know the scented wipes smell great but her skin is going to be extremely sensitive and their poop doesn't stink when they're newborns anyway. Those throw-over your shoulder/chest cloths for when she spits up. Q-tips and cotton balls, baby-oil, and a nice soft baby brush. Don't let the flakes from the cradle cap build up on top of her head. Buy yourself some really spectactular bras and those pads to insert in them for when you start to leak. Thats all i can think of right now as far as the neccessities, my last baby was 3yrs ago. Good luck mommy!

Just a tip - take it easy on the clothes buying. I have a 7-month old daughter, before she was born we bought tons of clothes in size newborn or size 0-3 months. She only wore about 1/4 of what she had because she outgrew them so quickly or because they were 'nice' outfits and she was home in something more comfortable most of the time.

Diapers and wipes. We bought a few of these clear plastic diaper stations (it's two cubbies for diapers, plus two little side compartments for diaper rash cream, thermometer, etc, and a groove on top to put the wipe container) at Meijer for about $10 each, and put one in the living room, one in the nursery, and one in the master bedroom. Man, that was the best $30 we ever spent. Keeps us organized, and I don't have to run the baby all over the house when it's time to change her.
Aside from that: a baby bath tub (I never believe in bathing them in the kitchen sink - that's where I rinse my raw chicken and stuff. eww. I don't want that stuff on her skin), some gentle baby soap and shampoo, some gentle baby washcloths and towels, and clothes. As others said, though, you'll get lots of clothes and blankets as gifts.
Congrats on the baby!

Newborns don't need much at first. Don't go too crazy. Get one pack of diapers, some wipes, baby body wash, a crib/bassinet, some sleepers. You'll get lots of stuff from people (especially clothes and blankets)

Lots of nappies! I wouldn't buy too many clothes as you'll get a lot of them for presents from family and friends. I don't use wipes as little miss is alergic to them I just use cotton wool which is what I recommend, I also don't use any powders and the only cream I use is Zinc and Castor Oil which helps for rashes. I would also buy a few blankets and buy a special fluffy one, little miss loves her pink fluffy blankie and it helps to put her to sleep at night!

You should get a crib and a car seat. get lots of undershirts and socks. hand covers. blankets, bibs, bottles, pacifiers, teething rings, a baby monitor and musical teddies and stuffed animals and lightup toys. Get a stroller for jogging off that extra baby fat lol! diaper bag, a bassinet, changing mat, swing(works great), vibrating bouncer (made for newborns)
Good luck! I hope that helped!

Well, I was just at Old Navy today and passed by the infant section... they have some gorgeous spring/summer dresses. But honestly, a litte one-piece outfit is more practical for your baby to go home in. You want her to be snuggly and comfortable. Save the dress for her first day at church, pictures, etc. (Also, gymboree has adorable dresses, they just cost a little more.)

Are you mom or dad? I think the best thing you can spend on your child, is time. Another great gift, although expensive, is chord blood banking. You have to be prepared for this though and bring everything to the hospital with you before the birth. I did it for my son and even though we may never use it, it sure will be nice to have if anyone in our family ever needs it.

Diapers....lots of diapers, diaper wipes, diaper rash cream, baby powder, diaper bag, car seat, stroller, crib, crib sheets, onsies, sleepers, outfits, socks, hooded towels, washclothes, baby tub, babywash, baby lotion, bottles--if you are not going to breastfeed---nursing shawl if you are.
swing, basinette--for whatever room you are in and you want her with you.
more diapers.....think about this....you are going to be changing her diaper almost every 1-2 hours for the first few weeks.
Good luck.....
