My mom works for a dry cleaning service. The owner is paying a more senior employee less than a newer girl because the newer girl "has no other jobs or forms of income." The more senior girl lives with her mom, so he refuses to pay her more because she doesn't pay rent. I'm in HR and I say that's not right. He's using his personal opinions and their personal lives to determine pay. They both hold the same job title and do the same duties. The girl being paid less has worked there longer. Don't you think that's CRAP??? He's also paying a 16 year old less than minimum wage and saying it's legal.

According to my mom, the girl whose being paid less, and has more seniority is a FAR BETTER worker as well... so it's not an issue of someone doing a bad job and getting paid less.

Well I agree that the girl should quit. That place is ridiculous. They do discriminate against blacks. They won't hire blacks and they talk badly about them in the workplace. I keep telling my mom to quit.

Well, age discrimination and racial discrimination is against the law, and managers can't arbitrarily pay one person more than another for the same job. I would file a complaint with the employment commission and let this moron see how far the "she has no other jobs" argument gets him. He will especially get busted for paying anyone less than minimum wage -- you can't pay anyone, ever, less than the minimum. Unless it's prison.

There will be a lot of responses that basically say

"The owner is King"

He isn't - Look into the law and see if an example can be made of this person - It is discrimination clear and plain

He should be forced into suffering some sort of consequence for it -

And ignore all the monkey's who have been trained to agree with the boss no matter what he says or does

its there own ignorance if they are talking so badly about another race who could give a rats a$$ what they think about them. Are there many blacks in your town or are they going off of the negative images on tv radio magazines and not the positive images. They have nothing else better to go off on and they are living in the past. Its total ignorance. They talk about other people but are doing worse things inside and outside the hose. I can go on and on, on this subject but I dont want the board to delete me. This has really struck a nerve in me I can say some cruel things but I'm not. Just ignore it and I think your mom should look for a better job.Its so sad they are miserable and living an ignorant life..those people that are talking abot others.

The only thing that's not legal is the less than minimum wage thing.

I would suggest that the girl that you're talking about start looking for a new job.

The guy who runs the business can pay whatever he wants so long as it's not based on discrimination or some violation of the labor laws. And the employees can leave and get jobs elsewhere.

Dry cleaners can't be reasonably expected to pay more than minimum wage, considering that they may be subjected to 16 million dollar lawsuits for losing a single pair of pants.

Unfortunately, it is not illegal, it is the employers right to set any pay wage scale for employees. Seniority does not hold any factor in these matters.

When I first saw your question I thought RESTAURANT!
Restaurant Owners and managers consider abuse and banging of employees as fringe benefit.

His logic is BS.
