We've had my daughter's betta fish for 3 1/2 years. About a week ago, he got a big lump on his head, above one eye. His mouth looks a little weird, too. The lump is bigger each day, and covers his whole head now. Last night, we discovered that he can't see forward anymore. To eat, he has to line the food up beside him and then turn and grab it. Any suggestions? After having a fish for this long, we're kind of attached to him.

The lump on his head is bumpy, not smooth. And aside from that, he's eating and swimming around pretty normally. I can try to get tetracycline, but the closest pet store is about a six hour drive away and we're not quite THAT attached to the fish. I have Maracyn here, but I haven't been able to find any information on tumours or lumps to know if Maracyn would help.

Odds are very high the fish has some type of tumor growing on it's face. It may or may not be terminal for quite some time yet, but also there is no treatment for such tumors. I'll assume the fish has been in a container by itself for most of this time, so that would rule out most other causes of lumps such as parasites. A bacterial infection is always possible, so before giving up on the fish, I would suggest treating with an antibiotic such as Furanase or Furan-2. If those are hard to find my next choice would be Maracyn TC (or any other brand of tetracyline). Treat as directed on the package.

The peeling dermis is amazingly possibly a reaction from the fishes slime coat to the two a water high quality subject, or extra possibly an infection. try your water for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate and confirm it particularly is fantastic. if so, then as this seems to be an exterior subject, a mix of Api Melafix and Pimafix will with a bit of luck make certain the problem, those are 2 meds which would be blended in evaluation to maximum others. supply them some days yet whilst no progression is obvious then email me and that i'll factor you interior the process extra expert help.

Is the lump bumpy or smooth? Sometimes older fish can develop tumors or cysts, which can sometimes be fatal. If he's active and able to eat it's probably just due to his age. However if it's severely hindering his ability to eat and swim, or is making him lethargic, stop by your local fish supply store and ask them to reccommend a medication. With proper treatment many fish heal up just fine. Definitely stop in and see what they can reccommend.

with old age comes human characteristics liek cancer.

Fish will getcancer from time to time, and from your story, that is what it sounds like. With the bump.

For cancer, their isnt anything relly you can do, some people will tell you to kill it, and that is up to you. Personally i follow my policy of no kill, so my advice to you is just care for him and give him the best for his remaining time.
