If the blood is fresh, it's very well occurring at the anus or rectum, which would probably heal on its own without anything to freak out about. Hemorrhoids can cause blood when a sufferer defecates. If the blood is closer to brownish or some other color, the bleeding could be occurring internally and he may need some serious medical help.

Concur with Arenajay. Could be hemorrhoids, or something worse. Abdominal pain is not a good sign either. Point is, go to the emergency room *now.*
Useful information for the doctor is if your friend noticed any blood in the stool itself as well as on the paper.

You should always see a doctor about this kind of bleeding. It could be harmless, like a broken hemorroid, but you have to check it to be sure. The stomach pain definitely means it needs to be checked out. Call the doctor and ask if this warrants an emergency room visit, or if it can wait for office hours.

It all depends on if it was bright red blood or dark? Was there blood in the toliet bowl? If it was just bright red blood on the TP - then it is most likely a hemorrhoid. If the rectal bleeding continues and your friend still has ab pain- go to the ER.

It is most likely an anal fissure. If he has pain in is rectum, or if it hurt to poop, it's possible that the skin in his rectum tore, causing the bleeding. This is not terribly uncommon, but he should be checked out by a doctor just in case this is not what's going on.

Could have an ulcer, or gastrointestinal disease like IBS or Crohn's..... or could just be a hemorrhoid. If the blood what bright red, it probably was just a hemorrhoid.
