It seems like only one person bothered to answer both parts of the question.

I think people talk about offensive guys because they can't readily spew statistics of sacs and tackles as they do QB ratings, touchdowns and season yards. And many don't understand (or care) about half tackles, blocking or coverage. I think a defensive player has to be so much better to stand out on his team (just doing his job will not get him the marquis billing) when all an offensive guy has to do is make it to the end zone.

Players aforementioned by my esteemed peers list those who have risen above--but hopefully the trend is moving more to people knowing all the positions and gaining a respect for defensive play.

And while we're at it, let's talk about whether someone on the O-line can be the face of the franchise--they are sadly forgotten until they blow a block or get dupped.

Yes-
Think Urlacher;Reggie White;Randy White;
Ted Hendricks;Mike Singletary;Jack Lambert;Ray Lewis;
People talk about the Offensive players because they get all the glory.They spike the ball after the TD, they throw the pass and get the points.
But the D made the plays to get them the ball.
But a great team is a unit of one.They need strength on both sides of the ball.Except the Ravens when they beat the Giants.
And the 85 Bears.They didnt need an o.(ha ha)

Steve Smith is 1 of the best but Peppers and the D got them where they are at...Ray Lewis and Reed are the Ravens...Urlacher and their D....Miami with Jason Taylor...Denver with Champ....Pacman and Bullok to me are the Titan( they won lots of games for them last year or lets say most)...Being a Dallas fan the offense has been changed so much in the last couple years so 1 that is steady was Roy Williams....So yeah they can be the face but most look for the guys with the tds not the guys that stop them....

Of course "Defensive guys" can represent companys...you've seen the names on answers above me.

"Offensive guys" seem to be popular because they are more often the play makers.

It isn't about the guys position that makes him "the face of a franchise".

Theres an answer above mine where someone uses an old quote that goes: "Defense wins Championships..."
The second part of that quote is "...and Offense sells the tickets."

Who is that guy that makes the play?
Well, in the mind of the media...it's the quarterback, halfback, or receiver. They seem to forget that the Offensive line is the only think keeping those people from an untimely death.
...any...I digress...
it isn't the side the player is on...it's his popularity...

hope that answers your questoin.

yes , ray lewis of the ravens , brian urlacher of the bears are a few examples . the reason offense is more popular is because it's more exciting and not boring . example wouldn't you rather see a 41-38 ot thriller then a 10-7 defense battle/offensive struggle ? but unfortunately the teams that wins 10-7 type games are the ones you see in january !!!

Offense sells - the most important position on the field is your quarterback, so they usually will be the most popular. But like someone said, Ray Lewis, how about Brian Urlacher, and to a lesser extent Rodney Harrison with the chargers.

Yeah if the team is known for the defense like I consider Ray Lewis or Ed Reed the face of the Ravens.

Brian Urlacher and Ray Lewis define their teams.....And yeah...as a Carolina fan myself....I love Julius Peppers...but I'd say nearly everyone thinks about our flashy WR Steve Smith before our amazingly talented DE...

Sure he can. If you name any team, what's the 1st player you think of?

Bears - Urlacher (They don't have anyone on offense, yet, that is consistent. Could be Benson this year.)

Panthers - Julius Peppers (The guy plays sideline to sideline every game, and he's a DE!! Name on consistent player on offense.)

Broncos - Champ Bailey (Best cover CB in the league. Their offense is great, but one player does not stick out this year.)

I can go on...
