If you can't work them apart with your hands you can cut them apart with a sharp knife making sure you leave some roots with each piece.

Once your lilies have quit blooming, and the leaves have died back, dig up the roots, and simply pull them apart (or cut them, if they don't come apart easily). Apply a bit of fungicidal powder to the cuts to keep the roots from going bad, and plant them where you like, or give some away if you're up to your neck in them!!! :-)

Wait until the green dies. You can be rough with them at this point and cut them if you cannot pull them apart. I have thousands and give a lot away every year.
