Their primary concern at the time was that the Bolsheviks intended to, and did, pull Russia directly out of the war against Germany, This was also a concern of the United States, which at that time was moving towards formally joining the war against Germany.

Lenin. The Germans personally took him out of Switzerland to Russia to end the two sided war. Japan wanted Russian controlled pacific areas. The Americans just didnt want Japan get it all.
