Director directs the actors and if it is a movie/tv then he or she directs the cameras to.
A producer produce the play/series/show or whatewer he or she is producing. That mean hiring people like directors, actors, stage crew and so on. Its also mean planing for sets and keping track of a budget and other financial things.

Think of the producer as the project manager or coordinator of the film beginning to end. They are in charge of almost everything. They help keep even the director on good time and budget. They secure funding (sometimes use some of their own), hire crew, take care of legal issues...they are probably the person with the biggest headache and the most anxiety over the whole project at the end of the day. Maybe that's why you see co-producers in credits, that's an awful lot for one person to balance by his/herself. That's how I've come to understand it.

Producer = $$$$ (They also help manage certain aspects depending on the producer)
Director = Tell the actors and everyone else how this thing is going to go down :-) AND either keep it within the budget or ask the producer for more $$
