well your quastion is not clear...
you mean that when you try to write a DVD with a dvd burner the dvd writer rejects it?
if it does, there might be a problem with the data you want to write, maybe they are more than the capacity of that dvd or they are locked.
and the other situation is that you might not installed a dvd burner and you want to write dvd. that I should say that it's impossible to write any thing without a DVD burner

If your burner is a DVD burner, then no problem since they support data storage just as CD-R's do - just a lot more space (4 gigs instead of 700 megs) . . . . unless you want to burn them as tracks and play them on a regular CD player. In that case, you really need CD-R's because most CD players will only play those. Toodles

Afraid the answerer was not the idiot in this case. DVD+R and DVD-R are two different things. Some old burners only support one of the two formats, and low and behold if you check the specs of your burner:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=lpg41037&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=241023&lang=en
yours only supports DVD+R. Think you might owe someone an apology.
EDIT: Well yes he probably could have explained that a little better for sure.

First thing is first... make sure you're updated on the drive: use my first source to check if you're updated.
Secondly, make sure you have a properly installed burning software: try a trial of nero just to see if that works, if you like it buy it from Best Buy or something. Use my second source to get a trial of nero.
Finally, run all your updates on windows if this doesn't work, try uninstalling the device listed in the device manager and then reinstalling it by following steps 1 and 2.

Have you checked to see if its enabled to burn on that drive. Go to my computer, right click on the dvd drive and select properties. It should have a tab called recording, check in there to see if its enabled to burn to that drive.
