You have really struck a chord with me...lol Yes, it does annoy me. For one thing, I teach middle school and it is hard enough to encourage my students to write - but when I get papers that have the "internet/text-speak" after I have gone over and over the rules of writing - I get really annoyed. They have not yet learned or don't seen to care that there are several ways to approach writing - formal and informal - and even informal - does not mean 'internet/text speak. I think that because it is such a short cut, kids and some adults use it. Personally, it takes me longer to figure out the 'short cuts'...I learned how to type and read a keyboard when I was 12 - so I only know the 'correct way'. Good point...

If I'm on AIM and I'm talking to three people at once and they're typing to me like crazy and I want to answer them quickly, then i just won't care about spelling. It's informal on there, and people have brains and can figure it out. If I'm typing a letter to say, my mother, then I'll take the time to check my spelling and punctuation errors. I do agree with you however that some people are so into shortening and abbreviating everything, that you have no idea what the hell they're saying. My cousin for example, lives on her computer and types a lengthy text message in a matter of seconds, but it's like, "i wnt $ 4 mcds 2moro". Sometimes I have no idea what she's saying so I have to text her back and ask her to explain, quite a bit actually.

Well, yeah, sometimes... but a lot of people make spelling mistakes white typing. I am a fast typer, so I make a lot of mistakes. So I can understand if it's an accident, but when people do it on purpose, I think it's just stupid.
It's okay if you're a teenager and wanna be cool. Then I understand, but if you're like an adult and spell LiKE DiZZZ then it's plain stooopid. x_X
And also, c'mon, this is World Wide Web, not school. A lot of people don't expect to be corrected on their grammar because they don't think it's that important if you're on the computer.

I know. I always check my spelling before I save work. Sometimes, I miss some stuff, but I am going into 7th grade now and in challenge English class. I can't stand when people type stuff just to get done typing. This world is screwed up.

it's because the intelligence of humans is slowly diminishing. in today's world, it's ok to settle and not strive for something better. in this world, it's acceptable to be stupid. too many people believe that they have to give up not knowledge for social acceptance; to be part of a group. the human race, it seems like, is going down the evolution ladder. but i agree that when someone is IMing a friend, they're not going to want to take the time to spell and properly punctuate everything. even on Y!A, people still use abbreviated things and nothing is wrong with that.

Yes it is annoying when people write like that but it's even more annoying when large companies try to appeal to teenagers by having slogans like "Where you at?" I'm a first grade teacher and it drives me crazy when students start writing with incorrect grammar because they hear it at home and everywhere they go.

there is a time and place for texting/internet shorthand. it's easy to misspell words, but for the most part people will understand that "pls" means "please."
what i find more annoying are people's incorrect grammar usages--but i'm not going to be a snob about it. i don't need those meaningless, little, daily triumphs over other people to make me feel better about myself.

Being non-white or not growing up speaking English is not what is causing this phenomenon. It's the text/IM culture. If you have learned English well enough for written comunication you know the difference between 'please' and 'plzz' . . . unless you learned through text/IM. Oh, no for you!!

You know I have to agree with you. And if they truly do not know how to spell they can hit the darn spell check and it will spell for you!
