Like anywhere, it depends on the type of job. There isn't much of a manufacturing economy in Austin (not many places in the USA do any more). But, there are a lot of jobs in the service, commercial, and high tech industries. There is also the state government if you are looking for civil service jobs.

The thing about Austin is that it has a very competitive job market. People in Austin are very well educated, and you're up against the best of the best in Texas if you're looking at competing for a good position. That's not to say there's no jobs, but the pay is not as rewarding as one may think...the reason being that the higher paying jobs are reserved for the best educated candidates...

Don't know much about San Antonio job market...

It's not an easy commute if you're planning it...Austin is at least 80 miles away from San Antonio and traffic in both cities is not very favorable for commute.

Austin is the better place to live, but the job market is competitive. It's a highly-educated city and a lot of people will take a pay cut to live here. It really depends on what kind of job you're looking for though. If you have a lot of experience in a field, you'd probably be alright job-wise, but expect relatively low pay. There's lots of government jobs in town, but lots of competition for those as well.
From what I've heard, San Antonio has a faster-growing job market (it's a fast growing city as well though), and they have a lot more industry. Your best bet would be to find a job before you move.

People do commute between the two, but it's not ideal (it's about 1-1.5 hours without traffic - with traffic, it's anyone's guess), but it might be alright if you work odd hours or something.

lolo lala, your so cute! ;) Austin is expensive, property taxes are out of control. I plan to move in the next 24 months, but that is when my home goes over 200% of what I bought it for. You bet your dollar I am getting out of here. So come on California residents........... they are coming!!

Jobs will be harder now since DELL is laying off another 500+ manufacture workers this weekend (wife is included) So plenty of people are going to be looking for new jobs. As for pay, I cannot see how people here can afford 400K homes and live luxury. I been here 7 years and cannot land a job over 30K-40K a year.
Couple people I work with travel to San Antonio to Austin to work. Crazy, but they make over the 80K mark, i'm sure... so it is no biggie for them

Austin is a horrible place to live. Lived there for 9 years. Horrible traffic particularly on I 35. Don't even think of trying to commute between the two. It's about a 2 hour drive with no traffic. Rents are high, property tax will kill you, people are arrogant. Just FYI. People that think that anywhere in TX is great is because they are from there. Texans have this "I'm better than anyone because I'm from Texas." They don't like anyone that's not from there. Beware.
