Of course. That is exactly what wifi routers are for. BUT you will initially connect on the router's LAN port to configure it.

If your Notebook has a built in Wireless adaptor you can purchase a Wireless router and connected it via cat-5 to your cable Modem.

Make sure you go into the Wireless Routers settings and set up encryption or anyone can use your wireless network.
