AMEN!!

I have been involved in politics since 9th grade when I joined the young Democrats and was a member of the YMCA Youth and Government Club at school. You have to start young and we need to train our children to be active participants in their communities and their government.
I left the Democrats, joined the Green Party and now do grassroots advocacy for peace and electoral reform. It is very difficult to get people involved because many feel that they are entitled to sit back and allow representatives do the work that they ought to be doing. If we want democracy then we must be vigilant and partake in the decision making. We must address our politicians and constantly keep them in check or they will abuse their offices.
Also, corporate financing of candidates exacerbates the problems within our electoral-plurality system. The plurality vote is bad enough but corporate dollars steer candidates away from the desires of the people once they are elected to office. Why listen to or represent a person that gave 50 dollars to a campaign when it is in the representatives best interest to act on the behest of a 50,000 dollar contributor? We really need strong Clean Election laws and public financing of elections so that candidates from minor parties and who are "regular Joes or Janes" can run.
I hope people wake up soon.

I wonder how we went from Motown to rap.

I was raised a southern redneck and am old enough to remember the 70's, but I can't deny that some of the best American poetry of that era is on the Motown label.

Look at this from the Four Tops' "Keeper of the Castle":

"You're the keeper of the castle
So be a father to your children
The provider of all their daily needs
Like a sovereign lord protector
Be their destiny's director
And they'll do well to follow where you lead."

So how did that lead us to songs like "Cop Killer" and high rates of unwed parenthood?

Maybe what we need to do is pipe in 60's and 70's Motown in all our prisons, including Gitmo.

The Kingston Trio had a song that was similar only comedic and Joan Baez sang the same stuff back in the early 60's. There have always been this type of dome and gloom songs.
