The pill works by preventing ovulation. Pure and simple. If a woman doesn't ovulate, she cannot get pregnant. Yes, missing a pill can cause ovulation and result in pregnancy.

No, you don't take it for the rest of your life. If you want to become pregnant, you stop taking the pill and use a nonhormonal method of birth control for a few months (so you can have a "real" period) before trying to get pregnant.

And if you decide you want to stop using hormones, you certainly can and find another method of birth control.

Wow, they don't teach anything in sex ed at school anymore, do they? I would suggest you go to www.plannedparenthood.org to find information about this. There is simply too much for me to explain to you on here. Just go there and click on the birth control link and then click on the pill. You can also look on www.webmd.com if you'd like more information. You should educate yourself now so you know how to protect yourself in the future.

For your added question: Sperm can live inside of you for a few days to a week. So yes, there is a chance that you could get pregnant if say you had sex on Sunday and then forgot to take your pill on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. You would ovulate since you missed the pill for a couple days and there would be a small chance that the sperm could still be alive and you could get pregnant. Does that help explain it?

You can email me at schmell16@cs.com if you have any more questions.

Your pill tricks your body into thinking it is pregnant - so it does not release an egg, like normally. When you skip a pill, your body does not have the hormone in your body, so your body can release the egg. When you have an egg available and you have sex, the guys sperm can fertilize that egg and get you pregnant. That is why it is important to take your pills on time. That keeps your body from releasing the egg.

The pill doesn't make you pregnant - you need to have sex with a man for that. Taking the pill helps keep you from getting pregnant by keeping you from ovulating. Once you stop taking the pill you could get pregnant as soon as your next cycle or it could take 6-12 months for your body to normalize. But I think you should consider yourself unprotected as soon as you stop taking it.

not until they die, just until they reach menopause (which may mean death for SOME women) and skipping ONE pill won't make you pregnant, you can just take it the next day. Skipping 2 or more days WILL put you at risk to get pregnant, cause you need to take the hormone everyday so that it will be in your system every day.

Birth control pills regulate your hormones, which is why you will not get pregnant They also cause other hormonal side effects, such as larger breasts, and hair growth (in unwanted places).

If you skip a day, or take antibiotics, you run the risk of getting pregnant.

You take it until you want to stop.
