Today, my grandma said she didn't believe in the death penality. I thought I was raised to respect the law and the cops and believe if people are found guilty have to take their punishment. Suddenly, the grandma I raised my whole life spouts some liberal let-him-live milarkey. Where do they get this stuff? How do they teach us right from wrong but want to turn around and believe police are corrupt and jails are full of "millions" of innocent men on death row. She actually said that! "Millions" of people have been falsely accused and exicuted! I doubt there have even been "Millions" of people exicuted! I would have heard about it!

Just goes to show you that you never know what people are thinking. However, apart from the false statements you mention like jails being full of millions of innocent people and millions of innocent people being executed under the death penalty, you should respect her right to have her own opinions on the matter even if you don't agree with them. Apparently you were raised right if you believe in law and order and consequences for actions. I cannot see where you have been damaged in any way by her opinions. I would expect that in return she also respect your right to disagree and hold your own opinions on the matter.

What was the crime of Jesus? He was executed. That was over 2,000 years ago, so maybe grandma was just contemplating the millions since the dawn of time.

Different cultures have different punishments. Often much harsher than here in the US. Get pregnant before marriage in the US... get an abortion. Get pregnant in the Middle East before marriage... get stoned to death. Go figure.

I'm not really religious, but I am getting older and more mellow. New DNA tests "have" proven that some convicted felons are actually innocent and have been released. I don't agree with compensating them for time spent... they were probably low income (hence. no good lawyer) when they got convicted.

Some should be executed immediately, but unfortunately our judicial system allows for appeal after appeal and then more time. Anybody that is convicted with DNA - or confesses - to murder or rape of a child should be put out on the spot. Examples: John Couey who murdered Jessica Lunsford (google it if you don't know about it). The two that got nabbed for murdering the Doctor's wife & 2 daughters in Connecticut (this weeks news).

I'm all for the death penalty, just trying to help you understand where your grandma's coming from.

Hope this helps.

First of all, it is a parents job to teach you to respect laws and know boundries, however as you grow up you also learn that although this is correct, our judicial system doesn't always work the way we feel it should. It is made up of humans, and to be human is to make mistakes.

Everyone is entitled to their oppinion and should not be punished because they don't agree with yours, or vise versa. Some police are corrupt and yes some innocent people are jailed. However, I am a firm beleiver that there is more good in the world than evil, unfortunatley, it's the evil that makes the front page.

This is not a comment on what her opinions were, it is a comment on someone saying one thing all their lives and then suddenly saying things completely inconsistent with their own core beliefs. As our grandparents and others age, they sometimes say things that they would never have said in earlier years. Please try to be respectful, it sounds like this is probably a confusing time for your grandma, too -- she may not remember saying it or may be appalled she said it, or something may not be working right in her brain. Tell her doctor if she really is continuing to say things that are 180 from what she has been saying all her life, she might be exhibiting signs that are not just normal aging.

She's a lot older than you, has lived longer and had more "living experience" than you do.

She is a fully formed, intelligent woman who has seen much of what life throws at us....she has seen and lived the inequities, the folly, the injustice and the whole sorry state of the "human condition".

You would be well-advised to listen to her. She is a lot smarter than you are.

It's alright, just respect your Grandma's view and try to see where she's coming from. Luckily you get to form your own views on issues independent of what your family thinks.

Simple: Opinions CHANGE. Just as you can change your mind, they can change theirs. I suggest you ask them why they feel that way. Usually they change their mind due to some personal experience.
