This past year or so, I have had a few occasions where I would hear my name being said in my head. I was at work one time and heard some one say, "Anna". I was just walking down a hallway. I turned and no one was there. Then it happened a few seconds later. I noticed that they sound sort of like an echo.
It happened once again last night when I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep. The only thing that i hear is, "Anna". There is no tone to the voice at all. No anger, happiness... no expression.
Also at times I can hear conversations. They are jumbled, like many conversations at once with maybe 5-6 people. Does anyone know what this means?

What you're describing are auditory hallucinations. You're hearing things that, by your account, do not seem to be real.

Auditory hallucinations are one of the symptoms of psychosis. One example of psychosis is schizophrenia. I know those words sound scary, but it happens to some people. If this is honestly your experience, you may have a mental illness that has been around forever. There are clinics that can treat you with both therapy and medications. You should set up a mental health evaluation and allow a professional to ask you the right questions and make a good recommendation for you.

Some people believe that symptoms like these are in fact evidence that you are able to communicate to people who may have passed away. This spiritual connection, if you believe in that, is often quite scary for people who experience it, but over time can be a fascinating way of experiencing the world, and some can cope with it quite well.

Whether you prefer the mental health explanation or the spiritual explanation, you might benefit from seeking one form of help or another if these are bothering you.

You are not crazy. This is a common phenomenon. It is not terribly abnormal nor is it indicative of mental illness. Over 37% of respondents in a study reported in the British Journal of Psychiatry that they experienced the same phenomenon. It's probably caused by not being fully asleep by the time normal sleep paralysis takes over. Stress and lack of sleep can make the events more intense and more likely to happen. They occur more often among people who suffer migraines, mononucleosis and complex partial epilepsy. I recommend seeing your physician first for a regular checkup and then you may wish to consult with a sleeping specialist because, if these events are occuring during the day, and they can, you might have a serious sleep disorder or chemical imbalance.

Also, you might be interested in Robert Monroe's book "Journeys Out of The Body", in which he speculates that this experience you describe is indicative of a predisposition / readiness for "out-of-body" experiences.

I think occasionally everyone thinks they hear someone calling their name, but if it happens often or you are hearing conversations I would speak to a doctor. This can turn into a very dangerous situation for you. It is possible you can start hearing voices telling you to hurt yourself or others. You might need to be on a medication so this doesn't happen. I wouldn't take this lightly. Get a professional's opinion. I hope this hasn't been very scary for you. Best wishes. Give us an update on what you decide to do.

How old are you? Are you depressed or do you have a history of psychological issues? What about your family? That is an auditory hallucination. There a different reasons for experiencing these: schizophrenia is the obvious, which tends to have an onset around the early to mids twenties- but I don't want to scare you. Many other severe forms of psychological problems can be accompanied by hallucinations or delusions. Make sure you make friends and family aware of what you are experiencing. You may want to seek a psychologist or psychiatrist if it gets worse. There are treatments and medications for people who have severe enough problems to warrant this.

You know... I've had EXACTLY the SAME thing happen in MY life- & I've always been mystified by it- too! I don't know what it means... -Whether it's somekind of minor "brain malfunction", or some kind of "dream" trying to kick in, or maybe a "message" coming through- from a parallel universe... -It's the STRANGEST thing!!! ... There's a LOT about the "Reality" around us- that we don't know about yet. Maybe THIS experience of ours- is just the tiniest "clue"- that maybe there's a LOT more to life- than meets the eye... THANKS for your wonderfull question! :)

Auditory hallucinations, yet not overwhelming. If they become more pronounced you might need some antipsychotic meds.

Oh babe, go see a therapist! You are either going nuts, or you're developing psychic abilities!

Good luck!
